BP Chief Operating Officer Doug Suttles said the company determined the "top kill" method had failed after studying it for three days. The method involved pumping heavy drilling mud into a crippled well 5,000 feet underwater.
"We have not been able to stop the flow," Suttles said. "We have made the decision to move onto the next option." (Link)
BP has said the next attempt will include robot submarines to cut off the well riser and try to then cap it. That attempt at a fix is projected to take up to four days.
What I know about deepwater oil wells could be printed on the head of a pin. But doesn't it say something terribly sad that the U.S was able to send men to the moon over forty years ago and we're now unable to fix a leaky pipe?
